ASME Affinity Communities are comprised of several different areas. These include
- Affinity Groups – Special interest groups which cross technical and geographic boundaries.
- Self formed by groups of members
- Formation sponsored by ASME governance units
- Online Communities – Ad hoc groups meeting online for networking or knowledge creation that have not yet petitioned to become an affinity group.
